    The new sovereign state of Czechoslovakia was formed in 1918 at the end of the 1st World War, and came under almost immediate threat of invasion necessitating the creation of a new army.
    By 1938 that army had grown to number 1.5 million men, and was well equipped with modern weapons, including locally made tanks.
