The Canadian Military underwent a major tactical reorganisation in the mid-1960s to improve efficiency and flexibility while reducing underlying costs due to the threat from an increasingly hostile Soviet Union.
Between 1961 and 1984 The Canadian Air defence command was equipped with Macdonnell CF-101 Voodoo all-weather interceptors, manufactured in the United States and armed with nuclear-tipped un-guided missiles for use against Soviet bombers
The pilots required intensive training to pilot these fast and manoeuvrable aircraft, and a huge effort was placed on fast deployment, each RCAF base equipped with the Voodoo was required to maintain a quick reaction alert facility and crews were expected to be in the air within 5 minutes of an incoming alert, some bases were extremely efficient and regularly brought this time down to under a minute.
Certified Mechanical Chronographs, like the ones produced by Omega and Breitling, were needed to implement the new tactics effectively. Relatively few were produced for this elite force and watches rarely come up for sale and they are expensive when they do.
