The modern Air defence force of West Germany was founded in 1956 during the cold war and was a key part of NATOs strategic air defence network, at the same time as Russia was backing the Air force of East Germany, many German pilots how had formerly fought against the Allies were now being trained to use American equipment and Aircraft.
The first Aircraft were Republic F-84 Thunderstreak and then in 1960 the modern Luftwaffe took delivery of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. This rapid change to Supersonic aircraft was made as High speed combat was seen as essential to counter the threat of nuclear bombers.
The F-104 had a poor reputation during it’s service due to the many accidents and fatalities, in total more than 100 plots were lost, many on high speed low altitude missions in poor conditions.
The German watch industry was involved with the production of high quality chronograph watches, the Junghans J88/0110 was issued to pilots from 1956 to 1967, and the J88/0111 from 1960 to 1967.
